The dative is a case that is used with an indirect object and certain prepositions.

PREPOSITIONS which are ALWAYS followed by dative:

| gegenüber | opposite |
PREPOSITIONS which take the dative if NOT moving TOWARDS the object:

| auf | onto (horizontal surfaces)/on/at |
| vor | in front of/outside/before/ago |
| neben | next to/beside |
| hinter | behind |
| zwischen | between |
| über | over/across/about (concerning) |

AN... VORBEI, meaning past always takes dative
eg, Er geht am {an dem} Bahnhof vorbei.
