The majority of verbs follow a regular pattern (stem + endings):

WEAK (REGULAR) VERBS

ich	-te
du	-test
er	-te
Sie/wir	-ten
ihr	-tet
sie	-ten

The modal verbs lose the umlaut, the 'g' of mögen becomes 'ch'.

STRONG (IRREGULAR) VERBS
The stem is different from the present tense stem. Ich and er add no endings, the rest have strong endings:

ich	-
du	-st
er	-
Sie/wir	-en
ihr	-t
sie	-en

MIXED VERBS
Change the stem but take weak endings:
bringen (brachte)
denken (dachte)
wissen (wusste)

Verbs which have a stem ending in 'd' or 't', an extra 'e' goes on the end of the stem, e.g. ich arbeitete from arbeiten.
