Training Absolute Beginners on Laptops
Posted by Reto

Maybe you can help me... I have the big and demanding task to train our 18 board members on brand-new, top-of-the-range laptops, the use of it, the use of W2K and as well some basics of Outlook 2000, IE 5.5 and the MS Office package.

Some of the board members have never used/touched a laptop or PC - and to make the whole experience better, my mother tongue is NOT English - so I do have to be very careful what and how I say something.

I have been training in various countries for the past 18 years; however this seems to be one of the biggest challenges - and I would really appreciate any hints, tips or links to material I could use to train and teach our board members.

Thank you very much - looking forward to your replies; either here or directly to my business email as well.

Hi Reto,

It looks as if you have a big challenge here. I think that the critical points are to teach what is needed at the point of need and to find out what they will be using the laptops for - both professionally and personally. The sooner they can use the computer to solve a problem/make life easier, the more chance that they will want to find out more.

Ideally you would want to coach them individually as senior managers don't like to be surprised or embarrassed in 'public'. If you teaching them together, move around from person to person. A projection tv would be useful for giving demonstrations.

You might like to have a look at the article on 'Teaching in Foreign Languages and Culture', but I suspect that your command of English is already more than up to the job.
