A lot depends on the level in the organization you intend to apply the leadership model to. Some of the key studies on leadership:
Transformational theory
Based on inherent motivation. Focus on commitment from followers rather than compliance. Leader is visionary, innovative and inspiring.
Attribution theory
Focus is on the follower more than the leaders. Followers decide what they perceive as leadership.
Transactional leadership
Focused on the relationship between leaders and followers. Rewards given in exchange for loyalty. Try looking at Beverley Alimo-Metcalfe’s work. She looked at what followers wanted from good leaders. It offers a modern take on the subject.
Action Centred Leadership (John Adair)
Very practical for the team leader level.
